• Sights Seen

Tag, I’m it.

Being out of sorts for a while now, I’ve fallen far behind on the weblogging.  I’ve seen a few movies and read a few books that the details are getting fuzzy on already!  The summer’s been busier at work than I’d anticipated it being.  I made a big mistake not taking 1–2 weeks off over the summer.  Now, I’ve got a few days off in September for the Austin trip, but can clearly see that I’ll need to take a stretch in November to keep my sanity/health in good shape.

I generally don’t participate in any of the blogger memes or “tag” games.  In spite of this, I’ll make a singular exception for Jennie at OnlyBlue who tagged me two weeks ago!   I’m not going to propagate it forward though.

8 random “facts” about myself:

  • Born on Easter Sunday 1975 in NYC.  (Coincidentally, I sometimes believe I can save you from yourself)
  • My K-12 education was split between parochial, public, and private.  Technically I was even home-schooled for the bulk of a year.
  • My mom’s family can trace their genealogy back to the Mughal Kings of India.  (Coincidentally, I have an interest in the histories of the Mughals, Tamerlane, and Genghis Khan)
  • I’m a Chicagoan.  (These days I’m expressing this through my efforts at Gapersblock)
  • I was Peace Corps Volunteer.  (Served in South Africa.  One of the best things I’ve ever done)
  • My CD collection was stolen a few years back (2003 or 04, the details are hazy now)… since then I have obsessively built an unwieldy music collection that threatens to overwhelm me.
  • I work on issues related to social justice.  (For the past 6+ years it’s been urban education reform by trying to use technology as a lever to improve classroom practice/content)
  • I used to want “to be” a writer.  Now, I simply want to write one perfect thing.

I think your previous goal was easier/possible.

  2. What a delicious insight into a very interesting man.
Ahh, the Mughal Kings! I am fascinated by all things Indian and make a mean curry — or five!!

  3. You’re amazing! You’re so philanthropic you make me feel sick about myself.

Easter Sunday, 1975, you were born during a very eventful time. That’s also really near the end of the Viet Nam war.

Your comment about wanting to write one perfect thing reminds me of an inspirational essay I read by Alex Haley. He said that he only became a successful writer after he simply wanted to write, not want to “be a writer.”

  4. Thanks! Sadly, I sound better than I really am.
